GJS's 1967 Dodge Monaco 500: Beverly

Nicely. I remember getting a long hexagonal tool back when I built my 440, pulling the dist and drive gear and winding the hell out of the oil pump for a good 3 minutes before firing off... I'll do that again. I mean, still jot sure if the idiot light works ... it should as it's on and it wasn't before but I'll get that tool and wind it up till the light goes out. Shoulda thought of that!
The tool is the preferred method. The FSM will have something like "disable the ignition and crank for 15-20 second bursts with several minutes between bursts for the starter to cool down."

You really don't want to run W/O oil pressure... hard on bearings and the cam isn't getting washed.

Awesome. Tool got ordered last night so we should be good by the end of the weekend.
I can't believe I didn't think to prime it.... duh.
Oh well, hopefully I didn't wreck anything!

I'd bet you're OK...

I need to see a mechanical gauge at this point. I would absolutely plumb a temporary oil pressure gauge and place it on the cowl so you can see it from the captains seat.

Indeed. I'll run one before priming.

the drive gear is pressure lubed. if it's out for priming, how much pressure would be generated at the gauge port during priming?
Good question. Never even thought of that.
I didn't even check psi when I primed my 440.

I'm not saying I need to see the gauge move during priming but more for once it's started. When I prime I like to actually see the oil pay a visit to the rockers which means you need to see them and don't forget that all the gallies need to line up in order for that to happen.

The rockers were not removed so they are all ligned up. Everything should be fine but I agree I wanna know the pressure when she fires up.

Yes but you need to rotate the engine a bit while priming to get the gallies to line up on both heads, it doesn't happen at the same time.

Ah ok.. misunderstood what you were referring to.

i might need to correct myself on post 267. checked a 440 block i have. the shaft for the drive is bushed and i didn't see a hole for lube oil. might just be splash oiled. reason for mentioning is if during prime no or little oil pressure is observed it might not be cause for alarm. could watch for oil spray on to the shaft during prime or just check an oil galley chart. good luck. will continue to follow.

Damn. No time for Bevvy this weekend and ran out of cash due to an over zealous firewood and beer purchase at the camp site this weekend..
So next weekend I've gotta get me a mech oil pressure gauge, plumb it in, pull the dist and drive gear, prime the crap out of her, find TDC again put it back together, it the key and hope the clickity clacking is all gone.

Well guys, oil pressure I gots. But I also toasted the **** out of my bulkhead ahead of my fusible link. Not sure where to go with this one. It appears to be a crappy connection with tired old wires but the connector itself ... don't know where to go for that... any ideas?

Wow, just read the whole thread. You've really been going to town. Great job. When you put your bulkhead connector back together I'd put some De-Oxit in it.
Yep, they all need a really good cleaning. I kind of fudged a male connector into the boot out to the fusible link just to get power. It'll do until she's running anyway.
As of now she's primed and at TDC. Ran out of time so I'll put her back together and start it on Wednesday.
Thanks man!

Damn. Not much time to play. Got her back to TDC after a bunch of priming, installed the dist and wired her back up. With a mechanical gauge was able to attain about 30psi oil pressure while cranking so I imagine I'm good. No time to start her tonight. Will crank her again on Monday in short 10 sec bursts then hope for the best!
Seems my intermediate bulkhead corrections are holding, everything stayed nice and cold during cranking... save for the + battery cable which was a little warm.
I can't wait to have my own garage.
More to come..
