I have a confession to make…

Sadly the axle retainers from Dr. Diff were not great. The driver side was machined incorrectly and one of the holes for the studs was machined like 1/32” of an inch off, and the axle retainer got wedged. Then when I went to go take it back off… one of the nuts I had started got galled and will not tighten or loosen…perfect. It looks like I will be working on the car into the 11th hour…

I still have to do the brake hoses, pitman arm, idler arm, bleed the brakes and secure a few random things under the hood.

Aarrghh!
 
Right side done. I will just borrow an axle from my other 72 for now. I will set the endplay tomorrow after the axle swap.

The car is back together with a factory axle retainer on the left side, it will do for going to the show and back. I had a disappointing email exchange with an employee from Dr. Diff. I was fought the entire time and was told basically I had caused my own problem. I can’t recommend Dr. Diff anymore. The customer service I got was very poor.
 
You can see how much Dr Diff’s axle retainer was warped just trying to remove the axle, and how much of a difference it is between a stock unit. There is a snowball’s chance in hell that the end play would have been even close to the larger side of spec with the big shoulder missing. Pair this with the poor, accusatory attitude from the employee who responded you can see the issue.

Neat, clean exhaust, no rattles and does not touch the axle like the Waldron tailpipe did. I’m disappointed because I wanted to like their system.

Wayne at BCM and TurboStart unfortunately failed to come through with the restoration battery. Other than that just a few items than need attention but it looks decent.

I am finding that some 72s use standard ignition wires. At least they are new, and say Chrysler Corporation on them with a Q1-72 date code.

I got to installing the FlowKooler water pump that showed up the week after Carlisle. I found the idler is worn out. That is on order and I will repaint the bracket when the new pulley shows up.

Electronic ignition was an option on 1972 2bbl cars and some normal 4bbl cars. Our '72 Newport Royal 400 2bbl was a late-built car with the then-optional factory electronic ignition. Another car sitting beside it on the new car lot had points. Seems that that late in the ;72 model year, EI became standard?

The early electronic ignition New Yorker I looked at at the dealership make ready stall had magnetic suppression wires on it, from the factory with Chrysler markings on them, but later ones with EI had normal carbon wires.

Just some observations and experiences,

It’s my understanding that Imperial was standard with electronic ignition from the start. I have my early build 11/71 green Imperial that had original wires on the engine with a Q3-71 date code and they were the older style black wires. I do not know when the change occurred but the orange NOS wires were causing misfires.
 
That may have been accurate, considering the Premium orientation of Imperial in the Chrysler brands.

Back then, my primary focus was on the performance cars from Chrysler, although I was mainly oriented toward "Chrysler" too. Chrysler seemed to be doing a "staged roll-out" of the EI systems, in the earlier days of it. Giving dealers a chance to get used to it before making it standard across the board.
