On a 65, there screwed into the driver side door jam...Since they were spot welded on, did they come off cleanly?

I can refab the plates, the problem is I don't know the vin numbers....I'm assuming the title is in your name. If so your DMV should be able to re-issue you a title for a fee. Maybe a internet search will show someone reproducing vin plates if you show proof your the owner. My state (WI.) will issue a new vin in certain cases where the vehicle is inspected.
There 65 300 L convertables, only 440 produced, I would hate to retag the cars.Another option is to have the car inspected according to DMV rules and have an "assigned" VIN tag.

My '67 is. I suppose it's possible that it has been changed to screws.I've not seen a VIN screwed on. In my experience, they are either spot welded or riveted. Fender Tags are a different story.

Find the dump where the garbage is hauled, look for that small file cabinet. Might have even been put aside for scrap....yes, 2..... The cars were sitting out back and I took the vins off so they wouldn't get stolen, the vins and titles were put into a small file cabinet, which I believe was thrown away during our move......
Then it may have been removed previously. Both my 300, and my NY, as well as any others I have been through, were spot welded on, with the screw holes showing.

Ive done all that and more,,,,,Chrysler Historical can help, they wont.....I've been reading how in '64 and '65 the factory simply punched two holes through the tag and the door jamb with a bit of glue. Gave the look that the tag had no rivets, when it was actually crimped in place. Back to the OP, isn't the sequence number stamped on the body somewhere? I guess you've already checked for a broadcast sheet. How about a certicard? You said the previous owner was deceased, I'd still try to contact any family members, there may be a file some where with old insurance records, or at least an insurance company that you could call and ask questions. I'd also contact Chrysler Historical, they may have records for pre-1970 models. Take a look at where the tag was mounted, sometimes the years cause an embossed impression of the tag. Don't give up!
