My $500 1972 New Yorker Brougham

Thanks for all the comments. The guy I bought it from had won it at a church fundraiser. The car was donated to the fundraiser by the original owner. Its got, we think anyway, about 74000 original miles. I found it on craigslist and it had been sitting since 92 I think. That's the date on the New Mexico tag. Its gonna get a repaint and vinyl top. Gonna keep the white vinyl top and go with either the original B7 blue or change it to B5. Haven't decided yet. Im on the fence about wheels and tires though. I like the fat white walls and original hubcaps (which i have). But I also think that some black steel wheels would look good with some white letter tires. The interior will be left completely stock. Its in amazing shape except for the package tray and the top of the back seat from sun damage. Ill get that repaired to look factory. The headliner is perfect and all of the interior lenses that are always lost and broken are in perfect condition. Just gotta get the neck on the radiator repaired and Im gonna start driving it. Its been dubbed the USS New Yorker.

Good for you. Sounds (and looks) like you've got a great car to tool around in....and got it on the cheap as well.

That is a very nice NY'er.......nice score! The interior cleaned up very nice.

Hopefully the old man smell will scrub out too. Found some old horse racing papers with how much money the guy had won back in 1992 at the horse track in Albuquerque. He didnt do too bad. Maybe he won enough money to retire and move to Florida and thats why he donated the car to the church.

I love the blue. Paint will be pretty easy and cheap cause theres not a ding or dent in the entire body. I got a guy that will do it for $600.

Does anything not cost you $500 lol. The guy on another thread here is bitching because the windshield going to cost him 1000 you got a windshield with a car attached for half that, sell him your car double your money. Just kidding keep up the good work

It does seem to be my magic number. I read that about the windshield. Mines cracked a little bit but i can live with it. Its character.

Gotta pick up a battery for it today. Ill post more after I get it running good.

So I got a battery for it. Put some fresh gas in it to see if I could get it to fire. After about 3 seconds of cranking my wife yells at me to stop. Walk around the front of the car and theres oil everywhere. Thinking to myself...CRAP!!! I tell her to crank it over so I can see where its coming from. Luckily theres just a hole in the oil filter and its spraying out and hitting the fan. Went and got oil and a filter and got that problem taken care of. Went back to cranking and after about 20 minutes realized theres only a dribble of fuel being pumped up to carb. So I decided I would check all the fuel lines to see if I could find a problem. Found the main line from the sender to the metal line on the frame was spongy and being sucked shut. Replaced the fuel line but while I was down there I found a small rust hole a little above the seam on the tank. Gonna have to deal with that before I start driving it but its not that bad. Finally got the fuel flowing and got her fired up. Runs strong for several minutes then notice fuel is pouring out of the charcoal canister. So a carb rebuild is next on my list. Had to hit up autozone to order me a kit. Came in today so Im gonna pull that carb off tonight or tomorrow and start tearing it apart. Ill let you guys know what happens next.

Sounds like after an A - Z fuel system going over, you'll be good to go for a road test and sort things out. Nice.

Well I got the carb removed and pulled apart. Found a nice smelly syrup caked everywhere. Got her cleaned and re-gasketed and put back on the car. Havent tried to get her running again. It was late last night when I got it bolted on the the wife demanded I watch the new Big Bang Theory with her. Ill get her fired up and see how she runs with nice clean gas.
