New to me 78 NYB on its way but please Don't tell my wife

COMPLETE..... Change of plans.

Did the BIG REVEAL !!!! And lived to write about it.

My daughter was invited to spend a few days in the keys... my wife wanted me to go with her to take her down. I said sure but I had a little surprise I needed to put some miles on... She just rolled her eyes and said “another one???” Yes. I said. You’ll like it. As suspected, it was not a big surprise.

Here she is with our daughter and her blond friend Adriana Isabelle. SMILING!!!!

Drive down was good if a little rainy. Let my daughter drive after FLORIDA city. Nearly screemed in panic a few times but she’s a good driver.

Valve covers still weeping. Coolant getting dirtier. Fuel consumption getting better.

Next stop beer and wings before the drive home and back to the shop.
About time you did that! Glad you're still with us, I suppose it's easier to reveal a car that's mostly fixed, rather than one that needs fixing. Maybe I'll follow your lead on my next car...

It really helped that it didn’t have any issues on the way down to Key Largo and back... that they would notice.

I did notice that the engine ran cool, that the adjustment to the kick down for the tranny worked well and that the idle was low and a bit unstable.

Just checked the mileage for shits and grins... 75 miles, mostly highway.... 12.5 mpg... leaning out the carb a bit looks to be making a difference. But the idle suffered. Easy fix.

Shoulda put on the Edelbrock....:poke:

:p Great work, Javier. Key West! What a great place to thake the clan on The Big Reveal.

What about the A/C? Did you have it on during the trip?

On high auto at 65 the whole way. It was low 90’s in the way down.

Had to turn the system down on the way back because the ladies were complaining. Too cold they said. Can you believe it?

Also I could hear the temp switch I installed to control the compressor kick in a few times. I set it to +/-32 degrees. So, there it is, this A/C can freeze you.

Very proud and very happy all around.

From the front Y to the tail pipe.... $440 all in. I liked that number....

Just one clamp (not three) at the tail pipe. Dig the cherry bomb resonator but it may be a little too sporty sounding.

Catalytic comberters? We don’t need no steenking catalytic comberters....

Checked the compression and all 8 were +/-5 lbs around 165... no outliers either way.

Looks good, but isn't it a bit close to the fuel tank? I don't know these things so I (respectfully) ask.

Are you using high detergent oil to clean out the engine, considering the !##% in the cooling system maybe the same applies to the oil passages???

The oil was surprisingly clean. I flushed it anyway when I initially changed it in February. Too little miles since to change it again and it still looks great.

The heads were obviously freshly done from my initial inspection and recent compression check. So... I’m thinking we’re good.

The only thing that I can surmise regarding the condition of the cooling system is that the radiator was leaking badly when I got it. I also discovered that the heater core had been changed recently as well. Both these conditions are usually an indicator of the possible use of cooling system leak suppressors and other witches brews. I think that’s what I’m seeing. The remnants of all that crap.

On a good note,

On the recent ride to Key largo, the engine ran cool with the A/C blowing in 90 degree sunny hot weather. When I say cool, I mean the needle never got into the normal range completely at any time and hung just outside of the range to the cool side for most of the trip.

In answer to your first question. No, I don’t think it’s too close. I have about 1-3/4” clearance which is a little more than what I had with the original resonator.

Ok, wasn't sure how close one can get before it's an issue.

Hope the car keeps getting better and better, just wish mine was done and down here.

I really enjoy your posts.

I feel bad that your car is surrounded with a parking lot full of ugly insect-looking transport pods.
Just yesterday I saw a brand new Honda CRV and it got me thinking (read: overanalyzing) and then Googling....

OK, now I must stop wasting time and go to work.
