New to me 78 NYB on its way but please Don't tell my wife

Found a carbon track on the inside of the distributor cap. There was a scratch on the inside that had collected carbon dust.

Sanded/ polished the scratch out with some 500 to 1000 to 2000 grit passes.

New cap ordered. Accel mopar cap.

Javier: Sorry for such a late reply to this posting, but this picture has been bothering me ever since I first saw it. That scratch on the inside of your distributor cap indicates a potentially worn distributor shaft bushing. There appears to be too much run-out which is causing the tip of the rotor to make contact with the inside of the cap. This is not good. I know its a pain, but I think you should pull that distributor and check run-out on the shaft with a dial indicator. If you already did this. . . Never mind. . .

Good point to check. It does have a little more runout than it should. But from what I saw, it was scratched at the time of installation by the tip. Ivan put it on when it arrived and apparently it was not set down and secured by the inboard clip that may have caused the hairline scratch. It may have also come that way from the factory. Either way.... NFG.

The cap electrodes, with the cap fully and correctly set and secured, extend about 1/8” past the rotating end of the rotor. If the runout was excessive, the rotor would be striking the inside of the machined electrodes. I saw no evidence of that.

Pick up was a little fried/old looking but was in spec. Ordered a correct mopar pick-up.

Wow.... This is a pretty crazy thread!! I thoroughly enjoyed you bringing us along for the ride when it came to buying a car sight unseen and getting the car back to (or in the process to) daily driver status. Definitely informative as I have been on the look out for a NYB optioned out as well as yours. Like you, Id also want to install the automatic height control system.

keep up the good work!

I got used to the automatic height control on my previous cadillacs and current T&C. Easy to get used to and noticeable when missing or inoperative. It’s an easy system to build or make.

I’ll do a separate thread for it when the time comes....

So that is your car!! I saw that one listed on hemmings before. I really like the two tone. looks pretty darn sharp. However, one of the stipulations is it has to have a hole in the roof (sunroof), I appreciate it though!

I appreciate the offer! but I am going to have to pass haha

The one I have had my eye on is this one

1977 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham - Clean, Runs & drives great! 440 V8

however shipping would kill me and put it out of my price range.

If you can get past the sunroof, I would gladly sell you the 76 NYB in this picture for half his price
Edit: it has vent windows, which are nearly as good as a sunroof...

Carb parts all in. Shop is packed so I guess I’ll be working my from home..... much to my beloved nubile young bride’s chagrin.... and mine.

In also are a set of new carb floats. Damn me I should have done it earlier.

And, I also got a set of NOS correct plugs.

OEM plug looks to be a bit hotter than Champion RJ12YC. OEM plug is also showing more of the electrode.

You can see that the OEM plug (35PX) has a thinner ceramic surround on the electrode.

On another note....

Just drove the wagon home from the shop... it runs as smooth as a Rolls Royce. Won’t stop until I get the NYB to do the same.

Had to put the wagon on “pause” because body man couldn’t take it till next week. Also was having cold start up issues. Looks like the start circuit on the ballast was bad. Swapped in a new one and so far so good.
