New to me 78 NYB on its way but please Don't tell my wife

I won't tell your wife, lol.

On a more serious note, weren't you concerned the NOS unit would have a dried out diaphragm?

Yes.
Which was why I kept the silicone diaphragm I got to repair the original unit. But, it turns out the diaphragm was fine.

Top material selected and on the way.

MPG today as I fill up with 90 octane non ethanol and also put in an octane booster for a few extra points and to test a theory.

83.9miles divided by 9.739 gallons = precisely=
8.61484752 miles to the gallon

or 45,486.39490707465 feet per gallon.

Seriously......raising the octane to assess the effect on engine vibration. Thinking that I may have a partially burned leaking exhaust valve that is getting hot and preigniting a cylinder causing the slight roughness under slight load I’ve been able to narrow down. More throttle (and greater volume cooling charge diminishes the problem. If not that then something else like a bad ring or cam, lifter, pushrod, rocker not doing a complete job. Could also be a blockage in the head that is limiting cooling. Hoping it’s just in the heads.

I’ll get it.

Around town in heavy traffic a/c on.

New main jet needles a little richer in last rebuild of carb.

About right IMO given the traffic around here.

With an Eddy or a Holley Quick Fuel carb you can almost double that MPG.

Then I'm doing something wrong....

I made a 300 mile trip around the Chesapeke Bay a few years ago and trying to conserve fuel and I got 16 mpg. Granted I was driving at sea level on very flat ground on a 70 degree day without the A/C on.

My normal daily reckless driving usually yields 11 mpg.
