One of my winter projects

Matt, if you want a 727 bulletproof built or any upgrades you should contact Mike (Newp). Believe me......no one on this planet has more knowledge or expertise in building 727's! He builds them for 8 second 1/4 mile cars and everything in between. And......he lives pretty close to you (west of Chicago in Indiana).
@Newp
Thanks for the suggestion Bob. I have a very similar trans guy right here in town who I'll have do this one. I'm now on the lookout for a used 45 RE or RH that I can get the clutch pack out of as it has thinner disks but 5 instead of 4 as the 727 does. It'll provide the capacity for a greater load which means more longevity. He has some other tricks up his sleeves which he's talked about and I won't pretend to understand but he's been doing this for over 40 years.

Call Mike.....he knows where to get all of that stuff.

Note to others while on the subject of compressors.
In my research, all the RV2 compressors available come without the clutch.
The FSM says when R&R-ing the clutch the clutch bearing must (their words) be replaced. Well, you are not going to find one. After a day of cross referencing, and digging deep into the deep dark bowels of bearing suppliers I found ONE guy who had ONE left. Evidently they are so scarce, I sold my used one on eBay for more than I paid for the new one.

Rock Auto sells reman'd clutches from Four Seasons, but they aren't cheap at about a buck fifty each. If they change the bearing, I wonder where they get ‘em?

Commando, do you have the bearing number from your exhaustive search?

Anyways, I’m on my second clutch already in only 3000 miles. The first one wouldn’t engage properly from the start so returned it. The second one has been installed since August and now the bearing is starting to make noise. UGH! And I haven’t even used the A/C yet!

It seems that Four Seasons is the only supplier that has A/C parts (at least the clutch and compressor) for our cars. Anybody know of any other mfr/supplier out there besides Frankie and the boys?

I'm sorry 73C, I can't find any paperwork on what bearing it was.
I doubt the recon clutches get the bearing replaced.
It took a lot of Googling, I remember.

No idea how I missed this great thread. The knowledge here is amazing.

Manual A/C systems are pretty easy to fix or rebuild. The ATC II systems are a major pain in the *** and I wouldn't buy a car now with that system.

Congrats Matt!
Yea..I'm learning more about transmissions in this thread than I thought there ever was to know. Taking notes.

Haven't had much time lately but I did disassemble the short block to find that the rotating assembly had never been apart, had a rope seal rear main and a ridge at the top and bottom of the ring travel. This will be a project for my spare time.
Thanks for all the well wishes.

They have a couple of parts that will interchange with a C-Body but they are the same as the others.......catering to the A, B, E's and nothing for C's.

I just got my compressor, condenser and drier from them. I told them I had a 69 Polara and they knew what I needed, the drier having double male connector and the correct condenser. I also got the o-ring set and compressor gaskets from them.

Not sure what their website says but they had what I needed, I called.

I get all the common stuff from my local AAP or NAPA .... they have all those parts sitting on the shelf. Trying getting hoses or a condenser. I found a vendor in California that makes Formal condensers that bolt right in. Hoses I had fabricated at a hydraulic shop in Delaware.

The wiring in this car needs a lot of work so it'll probably get a couple of new harnesses along with the changeover to the Rallye instrument cluster and lastly a new top which I have already purchased.

That's a change I'd make too Matt .. the Rallye cluster in an E body is soooooo much better looking than the standard one. It's gonna be a huge improvement and I'm sure a lot nice to look at while you are driving the car

Year One is having 30% off through midnight tonight. Good time to buy any wire harness. Code is NY15

Congratulations Matt, the 71 Challenger would look great all decked out for the wedding...but the Imp. would be very classy. Whatever you choose, BEST WISHES.
