Aside from going United States Postal Service Flat Rate Boxes, does anyone know of a cheap way to ship used parts around the country? It seems that rates are crazy for shipping items like door sill that don't weigh more than 5 pounds but because of the size/shape of the box they charge you ridiculous prices. Is anyone else tired of paying off the wall shipping? :thinker:

Fastenal. They'll ship for you. You'll have to pick up from their locations but it's cheap.

Ooooops, I see it's just odd sizes rather than large/heavy...

USPS is the cheapest game in town. You can save some money by getting a good digital food scale (Walmart, $15) and buying the postage online.

Also, avoid USPS flat rate boxes unless the item is over 10 lbs and is going to zone 9 ZIP code. I scrounge up my own packaging, and use the scale to get the exact weight. Anything over 13 oz goes Priority Mail anyway, but when using standard packaging it is way cheaper. I just shipped 6 moldings in a 24 inch long box, weighing just over a pound from New Jersey to Arizona for $11.25. Priority Mail flat rate would have been $16.

hey those are my door sills! lol I have to send you the money. How about this nightmare monday I sent a PS pump to another member well it is now wednesday and we just discovered it is in New Hampshire and supposed to be in TN. Fedex is aweful!

I was FedUp with FedEx years ago, and what can Brown do for me? Stay the H**L away from my house!

Bingo!!
Forget about the If it Fit's boxes.
Custom box it to fit it perfectly and send it Parcel Post.
Nothing is cheaper.
I had a large drill press ship for peanuts.
You just have to put some effort into it.

I can boldly say I have been screwed by them all. More than once. A year. For 20 some plus years. I have lost money on two shipments this year alone. Its only July. And I have been doing this for a while. Here's the low down. Small & or light stuff US post office. Med/ to large Fed X. UPS doesnt't hurt to check, but rarely use them anymore. I have not yet tried Fastenal. But I may soon. I loose a lot of business because of the shipping cost. Its part of the game.

I shipped two door panels to a member here and the price of shipping was almost the same as what he paid. The box was over- sized that is why it cost so much. That sucked.

Well I had my inner fenders shipped from Sonoma,CA to Buffalo, NY a few months ago.

UPS wanted $375
Fedex $400
Grey hound bus?? $120 - only caveat is that is the bus is full of luggage it sits until there is room.

It just seems absurd that your looking to sell someone a part at a bargain price for like $15 only to find out that shipping costs can be something like $30,$40,or $50. I guess when the fuel prices started to escalate a few years ago,so did the shipping costs. While we're on the subject, does anyone have any ideas on how they would ship large fagile things like window trim moldings with a 90 degree bend,or a complete bumper without trying to find a huge box or getting the parts damaged?

I have never shipped via Greyhound, but I have used Trailways. Many years ago before the merger/buyout. They had good rate, but it will sit untill they have room. And for me the bus station is just not convienent. So dont use them.

I use FEDEX, USPS, and Fastenal

USPS cheaper for light things

FEDEX cheaper for heavier things

Fastenal cheaper for really heavy or really big things as long as it fits on a pallet. A pallet is usually around ~ $125 or less for body parts or engines

Mmm, wonder why as I just logged into my UPS account to see what it would cost to send a 66 lb. tailgate from here to N.Y. Cost today was 162.52. The last time I really did send a tailgate from here to S.D. in 2009 it cost 67.00.

The reason large items are so damn expensive to ship is because of deregulation of the trucking industry. If you wanted to ship a door cross country for a fairly cheap price, the LTL carriers (look LTL up yourself, I'm too tired) like Roadway, Consolidated Freighway, etc, would do door to door delivery. ICC regulations provided fair rates for everybody big and small. When Ted Kennedy got the ICC eliminated and got rid of regulations(solely in retaliation to the Teamsters) all the Common Carriers went under. Less than have a dozen are left and they are dying. So now, the parcel carriers (UPs, FedEx, whatever) are doing all the little man's shipping. Once again, you got screwed.
