Rock auto has Lares brand steering coupler that is an exact replacement for my 67. Bolted in with no issues. Was going to try a Land Rover coupler but didn’t have the room without modifying

Yeah, I see those other pics. I might buy one just to see what the heck it is!
I'm guessing it covers the pot coupler to keep some heat away from the grease inside. Anyone else?

No mystery.
They have the wrong application.
I believe it's actual fitment is for the Forward Look models.
We talked about this in some other threads. Of course, it was just after I bought the Rover piece and modified it.

That steering insulator is used on Forward Look models.
And if my memory serves me right, it goes where the red circle is, below.
