The Bluesmobile

Havn't been to active on the board lately.. I've been checking in daily, just not keeping in touch with everyone. Hope all is good with everyone!

Been busy working, and any free time is spent in the garage. The blumo came apart for some BADLY needed metal work. Tore the interior out to find Michigans ugly work all over the place.

This is what I found in front of the rear wheels! Uhg! It all fell apart while removing the carpeting. Notice the structural metal in the rockers are ate up badly as well.

After seeing that, the car was quickly un-insured, and put in the garage. Can't believe she made the long haul to MI the other month!

I've been spending a $hit ton of dough on metal working supplies the last couple months. See if I can save her. Learning as I go, and reading as much as I can.

The rear end, gas tank, and everything else came out from the rear.

Started digging into the passenger side quarter, and trunk pocket. Or shall I say what use to be.. Finally have all the bad cut out, now need to piece her back together. Picked up a tank of 75/25 for the welder tonight. Should be putting it to work tomarrow...

Guess I should put some gloves on when working with the new metal.. lol This is gonna take a while..

Ask me again in 6 months... It better though cuz I'm all in on it.

Made my first small patch panel. Don't think it came out to bad for being my first attempt. Its 3 pieces all together. Shoulda been 2... but F$@ked up, and trimmed the outer piece to short. This is the rear bottom corner of the quarter panel. Still needs a little trimming, and fitting, but I'm gonna wait till its on the car, and the full quarter patch is up to it.

Heres the next piece to be made. The rear trunk wall. Hopefully this one will come together a little quicker then the other piece.

Been working on this corner all week, and still not done.. Getting close though! Still have a bit of grinding to do... A real ***** with all the curves, and joining metal in that section.

A before shot-

Also picked up some stickers for the dual snorkel from Herbs parts at the Garlits show.

Sweet, some how missed you new threads here lately. Great work glad to see you are still plugging away. You have some welding skills I wish I had myself. Fortunately I haven't needed much of that skill on my current project

Yea, Mike, I'm jealous. I really need to get cranking on the 73 Imp & learn some welding skills.

IF I could suggest one thing to you, when cutting out the panel, don't have the vertical and horizontal cuts intersect at 90 degrees. Try to radius the line. While it's perfectly acceptable, when you weld the corner the heat is concentrated and tends to burn through MUCH easier than it should. from my experience welding the radiused cut is much easier.

Thank you 67monaco. Please feel free to suggest anything! I'm looking for it! I did have that problem with 2 of the corners.. It was also the sheetmetal on the car, which seemed a bit wierd to me, as the new metal seemed a bit thinner then the cars metal in those places.

I've been reading/watching your thread on The Sherif, and look to it for inspiration, as well as other build threads.

I really f#ck5d this panel up I think.. It warped quite a bit towards the middle. But I'm trying to save it, being its already on the car..

The first rough cut. Its been worked and bended where needed.

I was luckey with the grooves in the original panel. Was able to cut just below them, and save them. However the front one, I did have to cut into. I flattend the edge of it out, and joined it with the flat new metal going in. I was not too concerned, as it is only missing an inch from original. Also this car is so rough, it will never be "perfect" again. If/when I get to the new floor panel, I'll take the piece up to a local body shop, and have them run it on a bead roller...

Trying to stay motivated doing this stuff has been a pain! Feel like Im going nowhere at times! lol
