I have a 1970 Plymouth Fury III with a 318 with a 2bbl carburetor. I plan on buying an Edelbrock 650 4bbl carburetor to give it a little more power. I was wondering if it would be worth it to go with a different cam?

If you're not changing the rear gears, heads, and upping the compression, then no. Headers would be a better upgrade than a cam, or true duals if you have a single exhaust. Headers are a pain in the *** though.

It does have dual exhaust. Thanks for the reply. I might just wait and see how the new carburetor does before I change anything.

No offense, spend your money elsewhere on the car. Mess with the engine when you can do it right and do it complete

If it's got dual exhaust and now the 4bbl - I'd change the cam. Stick in the stock 340 cam, or a small aftermarket cam and replace the valve springs with it.
Agreed cams are cheap, a stock 340 is good, stay away from RV cam, your car is not a RV and not worth the effort over stock that is already in there.

Nice car first off! I have a 1969 Fury III. I run a Edelbrock 1406 which is 600 cfm on my 440,,so with a 318 I would not go any higher cfm unless you want to really rev it, and have the cam to do it justice. What is your rear end ratio? A 318 on a big car like that for performance you want has to be really thought out. You can't have it all. It seems to me either you want out of the hole performance or the other extreme would be highway cruise mileage or somewhere in between and compromise between the two. . I think you have to choose and go from there. Why are you not happy with the car specifically the way it is now? What do you want from it compared to what it is now? I think you must target what you want the car to do well in a narrow area and go for it. Another route would be obviously a bigger displacement engine which will have a bigger torque sweet spot. to move the mass.
Got any more pics of your car??

Thanks for your advice. Also nice 69.
I was just looking to give it a little more power. The 318 that is in the car runs great, but it could use a little more power. That's why I thought adding a 4bbl carburetor would boost my power to where I want it. I was just wondering if putting in a new cam would be worth it since I am going to have to replace my intake anyway and the cam is right there.
Thanks for the suggestions. I have to reupholster my car in the near future so I might just stick with a new carburetor for right now.

Well I would love to know your rear end ratio. If it is in the 2. something area you could just change that and get a good kick in the butt without changing a thing in your engine.,,,, but go to high a ratio and you will be swearing on the highway at 70 mph.

I can check that by seeing how many rotations the drive shaft turns per wheel revolution can't I ?

Yes you can. I hope guys that know more than I chime in with experience with the 318 in such a large car.

You are kind of limited with a 318 in a big car.

Normally, I'd say you want to look for some 360 heads and intake manifold. A stock 340 cam would work nice with those. But... With the big car, I don't know if that's the way to go or not. I really think you have to look at a 3.23 rear end gear first. It might be better if you stayed with the plan you have and just used the stock cam.

Before you get too crazy with the 318, I'd look at just getting it over and doing a 360 engine.

Aren't the chambers in a 360 head bigger than a 318, lowering compression?
Yes, that is true. As I said, I wasn't suggesting that you do that you use those heads.

Of course, the heads can be milled, but that's another subject.

I'm out...

I can't believe they {Chrysler} actually put slant 6's in these sized cars. I have seen a few in 69 fury's. Can't imagine how slow they must be. Is a slant 6 lighter than a 318 or heavier? In any case I would think a Fury with a 318 or /6 must handle a good bit better than my 440 fury.
