1969 Imperial progress thread

Stan you should have figured out how resourceful Julian is by this point. Julian, I see you're going to be at this for quite a long time if you're going to insist on making the tools you need for the resto but it'll make the thread that much more interesting and entertaining. Nice work brother!

Well, the one thing I have learned is that he is Determined.

Thanks guys. I'm not in a hurry and will do as much things as I can by myself. Not only because every other way is crazy expensive, but just because it's interesting and fun for me. The journey is its own reward.

And I'm learning soo much about the "good old technology" with which I ain't grown up!

I'm waiting for my new engine stand right now to pull the engine with a forklift. Next project is to sandblast the stubframe.... "not fitting into the ikea box" ;)

Than learn how to weld and do bodywork... A lot to learn here :)

Now that I think of it, I have a family friend who travels to Bad Durkheim with some regularity. He's a bit of a car guy, too (not that you could tell from the ex-fleet Tauruses he seems to always buy). I'll ask him if he is willing to put a car part or two into his luggage next time he gets over that way. If he says yes, I'll let you know.

Thanks Joaquin! That would be awesome, indeed! Let me know what he thinks! What is he doing in germany? Is he on vacation or business?

He just got back to me, and he's happy to help. He's in the US now, and doesn't know when he'll be back over there. He managed to retire young, and started going to that region while researching his genealogy. He thinks his next trip will be to western Ukraine to see a friend in declining health. That will, of course, depend on what happens there in the next month or two.

PM me, and I'll give you my email address. You can send me reminders every now and then to check his schedule.

I Pulled the engine today. Just a few complications, nothing big. I had to remove the whole bracket of the rear engine mount to get enought room for the oilpan to get over the K-Member and I had to remove the complete right front engine mount to get enought room, too. But after that, it came out easy.

I created a environmental hazard with ATF, but no big deal. A bucket of sawings selved this problem.

tomorrow, I will take the engine apart to inspect how bad it is inside.

And now a lot of pictures:

One good sign for me was all the coolant, that came out of the engine block! Means, not the whole cooling channels inside the block are stuffed with this screwed up coolant gum!

I would inspect the bore on m/c if no pits rebuild it yourself some of the cores are pretty bad on reman stuff now and sad to say their attitude is okay send it back and we will send you another which is not bad here but add that you are in Germany you may have car done before you find a good one and you wont know till driving. If you can find a new one sure but i think your better off rebuilding yours if its not pitted. IMO

You're supposed to let the tranny fluid drain all over the floor. That's how I do it anyway.

I like the five-fingered-condoms on the U-joint and the trans seal! Great idea, actually. Looks like you are coming right along on the Imperial.

Good stuff Julian, I'm excited to see what you find on the inside.

If the bore on your MC is okay, let's have a conversation about getting you one. That's the sort of thing we can do a three-way trade. I can exchange my core for a rebuilt one, you pay for it, and I'll give it to my friend to deliver. You give him your core, and he'll bring it back. I don't have any need for it, so I don't care if it's in transit for a month.

Do you have the same Budd brakes I do? We could run the same gig on brakes.

I haven't yet further checked the brake parts, but I will do that! I would like to use the original, but Joaquin, I appreciate your offer. That's a great idea! I will get back to you if I have to replace the MC! To ship a heavy part like that more than once would be a pain in the ***!

Me to! I took off the intake and the valley pan already. It's VERY clean inside, no gum, no slick... But I found a little rusty trickle on cylinder 8 that comes from the velves and go down to the lifter :/

I hope so! We will see, but unfortunately not today... I bought the wrong bolts for the engine stand... They are 3/8"-16 UNC x 4" Grade 5 (8.8), but I want Grade 8... I hope they will arrive tomorrow...
