1972 Fury III 360 101498 miles

just don't like that trans line splice . do you have a flaring tool ? so you can put a no leak type fittings there . if you have a 5/16'' line bender you can make a new one from most store bought fuel lines .

Yea there is a reason why for the metal transmission line is quite a bit of pressure can be in the lines, take it from me, I added a extra transmission cooler with a hose, I used proper barbed fittings but the hose quality was less than desired and the lazy way I routed it to the top the result was the hose burst on a late night high speed run. Worst part was gunking all the ATF from the outside of hood & windshield.
If all your doing is puttering to car shows I guess you can get away with it.

If that's a mess, I'm in a landfill in my garage. Nice work going through all the little things to get that well oiled machine.
My wife and I have an agreement: no household items stored in garage. Thus our attic and porch look like a landfill.

Steering Linkage Center Link: not really a hard job: add 2 dust boots for ITRE, torque all 4 nuts at 40'lbs, install 1/8" cotter pins, and grease the 4 fittings. Biggest problem was that my grease gun stopped pumping grease, and I had to get a new canister, even though there was 2-3 inches of grease left in the old one. It's an air compressor powered grease gun. Not sure why that happened.

As far as the trans line goes, if you have a flare tool you can add a section that way or use compression fittings and add a section.

:eek:I wouldn't be able to sleep at night.
I'll probably have nightmares.

I flared both ends , because the prev owner did not. Also, added trans oil hose, rather than whatever deteriorated hose was on there. Still need to make a new line sometime.

Today, since the water pump mounting bolts seemed to be loosening, I tightened the 3 I couldn't get to with fan & fan pulley in the way
My fan is close to my radiator, no shroud mounts on radiator, so after 1/2 socket & 3/8 breaker bar to loosen, I made this tool to remove.

All 3 bolts got 30'lbs. Hope my water pump won't start leaking.
Everything back together and still Ford blue. Paint: another thing on task list.

After trans filter change, added back 1 gallon and 1 pint of Dexron. Note: FSM 21-77, if you drain the torque converter, add back 6 quarts. I was trying to fix a leaky pan gasket, so I did not drain the torque converter. I just changed the filter since I was in there.
Fury after test drive. Ran like a champ. No leaks initially, but over the next couple days, we should see if the trans oil pan leak is really fixed. Cardboard under car, just in case

Cool side marker light for Fury III. Color is actually yellow.

Careful on using a ratchet wrench close to a old fragile radiator, one slip too close to a old tube ='s a leak (don't ask me how I know) plus you may find as you get the bolt almost un-threaded is that there is no room to remove the ratchet, (don't ask me how I know) best to use a box wrench and after you crack all 4 loose just spin them out with your fingers, (safest way many times).

Radiator, Water Pump, Fuel Pump, Valve Covers, and Oil Pan are not leaking. But Trans Pan still is. ****!

After cork gasket (previous owner installed), then rubber gasket, then bend and check with straight edge and rubber gasket with Ultra Grey RTV both sides, it still leaks at left front. I checked and oil is not coming from shift lever or anywhere above. I have another member who is going to sell me a new pan that he's had for a while.

Car's going to have to sit until I get the new pan.

In the end, Ben's trans pan fetish was his downfall. Should have just gotten rid of the trans pan in the first place, and I wouldn't have had to do the job 3 times.

Great work Ben.... but I have to ask...

The pump pulley in blue is unique. Did it come that way or did you paint it?

Hi Javier
It came painted Ford blue. I suspect that the PO went to Advance or AutoZone and had the same problem as me. Neither stocks Mopar Engine Blue, not even on their websites. Had to special order at NAPA. Pulley Paint s/b black, IMO. Ben
Nice work! I do prefer to replace trans lines when there's any defect
CHRYSLER Automatic Transmission Cooler Lines
Ever give any thought about replacing the starter? I recently replaced the started in my 87 d 1oo with a wrecking yard dodge dakota min starter, works great!
Hi Barnfind,
My starter works well. I like the mini-starters, but it's hard to justify spending the $, when the car has other problems.
Looked on Summit: All the lines seemed to be for BB Chryslers, probably 26" radiator with AC. Mine is small block non AC, 22" radiator. Haven't measured spacing to see if AC and Non AC are same. Do you think a BB set like HTC 6901 would work? thanks, Ben

I would give them a call, fortunately the lines are soft and will bend if they need a bit of customization, better than the patchwork that you currently have. I picked up 2 mini starters from the local wrecking yard for a 50 spot.
Looking forward to your progress!
Ben

Why the whitewalls are inside?

If you take opinions, I say that the cop wheels would look good without the caps but with RWL tires.
Hi ImpJay, I like RWL tires, and maybe one day I'll think about that. For now, wheel tire combo looks great to me. Plenty of wear left in the tires, so I'm going to focus on more immediate concerns. Like: fixing leaks and making Fury roadworthy, saving for body work & gold paint, rechroming bumpers, recovering dash

On Leaks: I thought RTV adhered to rubber gaskets. It does not adhere to NAPA rubber trans gaskets. Coating on rubber?

Wayne @DeltaV offered a new Mopar deep well trans kit that he bought back in 1987. He sold it to me for $40 plus ship. Thanks!

Deep well with drain plug vs. original. 1 quart capacity increase. Needs prime & paint. (tomorrow? Maybe not, wife's family coming for 3 days)

20181120_133038.jpg

Things that suck about RTV. If doesn't seal, tap every bolt hole to remove.
20181120_145934.jpg

After razor blade & sanding and TBI cleaner sprayed in the bolt holes, mounting surface is clean again. (Drops of TBI cleaner visible.)
20181120_150655.jpg

Filter adapter included with kit. Since filter much lower, is anyone running trans oil at a quart lower on the dipstick, so fill level after sitting isn't as high? Directions say use original dipstick, so I guess most people add the additional quart.

Deep pan holds another quart, I always add that extra and fill as if it is a stock pan.

REALLY? A shot of carb clean and a blast of compress air works for me, think your wasting a lot of time on this cleaning bit IMHO.
I didn't think of compressed air. Good idea!
