70 Newport Rear springs

One interesting thing I notice. The nuts are on the bent side of Gary's shackle and they are on the straight side of Dave's. Hmmmmm....

I have one of each in mine. Took me a while to figure out which way the bent side goes on. As for the bolt escapade, if your not concerned with originality, find a hardened carriage bolt with the right length and be done with it.

Yeah, that entire assy on my car was covered with gunk. The nut on the bottom pin sheared completely off.

I'm somewhat concerned with originality, but for something like this which no one sees or cares about, there is a true value in town that sells carriage bolts all day long.

Are those carraige bolts James, or the original pins?

Are those carriage bolts James, or the original pins?

I was lucky, they are the original pins and nuts. I unbolted the three bolts on each side then dropped the whole axle, so I had easy access to the hanger assembly. One of the hangars was bent up pretty good from all of the twisting, but easily hammered back into shape. I wouldn't have thought twice about using carraige bolts if I needed to, but the pins were in good shape, so everything was blasted, painted and re-assembled as is. I did not replace the springs, and I will know for sure if that will need to happen once the car is road worthy. I know one thing, I used enough anti-seize on all the parts that this thing will come out like butter the next time around.

I want to try and find pins if I can...BUT if I can't I wont have any choice but to go the carriage bolt route. The thing about the pins (Dave reminded me of this too) is they have splines on one end.

Right, but if you get something with a hex head you would just need a wrench to hold it in place while you tighten the nut. I remember the clearance being a bit tight, but I think it can be done.

The pins are designed to fit in the round hole, and lock in. This allows only one tool to be used to pull the front bracket. Using a carriage bolt instead would require a square hole being made. If it was me and I couldn't find the stud I'd use a grade 8 bolt instead. You can put a few welds on it to keep it still, or just use a wrench, and ratchet to tighten.

Problem with carriage bolts:
Try and find your size in GR5 or GR8. You're not going to get them down at True Value. Even the one with two aisles filled with those pullout drawers.

Try these guy. They might have it.

A hex head wouldn't have the square shoulder, the welds is a good idea. Stan's got a point, locating a bolt with the correct dimensions may be a problem. I remember kicking around some long shaft bolts from either an alternator or AC bracket, I wonder if something could be re-purposed? Gary, I've got a bunch of spare bolts from the PO of my vert, I'll take a look tonight and see if there is anything useful.

The thing with Fastenal is that they want to sell you 100 of something. I snapped the front hanger studs taking my springs out. They looked just like wheel studs only a bit smaller. I spent hours looking in auto parts drawers, no-go. Went to Fastenal and they had something similar, but I had to by 100 of them at like a buck a piece. I ended up just using hex head bolts and nuts from Lowes.

Just a thought, did you try going to Chrysler parts department? They can give you an idea of what might interchange. The part number for the shackle with the pin is 3402136.

I looked for those shackles four months ago, Brads had one at 60 bucks. So I went to Murray and spent double that on two used ones...go figure.
I forgot about Brads.....look into that Gary, or the Summit or Mopar performance shackles. Can you buy a shackle and use those pins?
