'71 Sport Fury

The exhuast came in, damn it makes an unbelievable difference in both performance and how smooth the car accelerates. It feels great guys. I went with glasspacks for mufflers.

I got a kind of wierd smell though in the cabin. Kind of a faint chemical rubbery smell? Maybe it's the heater core. Any thoughts?

Also looks like Commando1 was probably right. I still don't know for sure if they are or arent factory but the exhuast shop guy thinks they might be aftermarket.

What's more impressive though is that they still work and appear to hold air. After nearly 40 years.

Monroe and Gabriel Hijackers were the biggies in the 70s and 80s. I know I couldnt keep air in them when I was young and stupid and running 100lbs of air in them

hi jackers pumped up to 100 lbs gave clearance for the
10" wide rear rims that stuck out three inches past the quarter panel. knock your fillings out with every bump but it sure looked cool.

the new pipes are covered with oil to keep them from rusting.that smell is probably just the oil burning off the new pipes.

Well next week I'm starting on the carburator and the intake. That should be fun. I've worked on the stuff before on my 68s 318 so I don't forsee that much trouble. That'll really bring the Fury to life.
When I'm working in that I'll try to take off the exhuast manifold and work on the heat riser. The exhuast shop guy said it was stuck open and I think that could be what is causing the metallic rattling sound I've been hearing for a while. I've already figured that it isn't coming from the engine itself so that narrows it down.

I got some money left in my budget to maybe get an aftermarket CD player, I'm thinking of bolting one on under the dash and keeping the stock radio where it is. You know, nothing too tacky or anything, just something to liven up long car rides.

Why? You are changing the carb, intake, talked about headers and do have custom duals. Install an in dash unit.

A dash unit might be good. I like the radio it

Think so? I kind of like the look of the old radio, but it isn't super functional. But on the otherhand it might be tough to wire them both in at the same time.

By the way, any of you guys have any experience with dash caps? Like this:

Don't do the cap, spend the 700 and buy the reproduction.

Replace the radio with an in dash unit .

Leave it to me I will spend your money wisely

Haha, yeah will do.
I'll start looking for a in dash unit. I don't want to spend several hundred dollars though, I just need something durable with a CD player and an AUX jack. Nothing too ugly either.

There are several in dash units that will work for under 200. You will need some 6 X 9s for the rear deck but you will add speakers even for cd player.

know of any units off the top of your head?
I'm actually looking at replacing all of the speakers already. Only the driver's side still works and it doesn't work all that well.

I've always liked Kenwoods they still have a variety. Don't let your curved dash face fool you, it will work

Well I began work on my car today, forgot to snap a picture though. The work went along pretty well, although the last person to work on the manifold pretty much glued it shut.

Also it looks like a couple pushrods got bent somehow. My dad thinks it happened when I fired it up the first time after it sat for a decade or so. Who knows though.

Anyone know what kind of rods I should get? Should I replace all of them or just the bent ones. I'm looking at maybe getting something that's mild performance if that's possible.

Personally, I would just replace the bent ones and that will easily get to when and if you do a rebuild. Even some used ones out of somebody's scrap bucket.
Others will try to talk you into doing everything at the same time,
I don't think you need to.

I took your advice Commando1, The price for the push rods was really reasonable actually, just two bucks each. I'm looking forward to getting this engine together to see the difference all of this makes. The weather in WI has been unseasonably nice, as I'm sure my fellow northerners can agree.

Anyone else been seeing classics on the road yet? I saw a black El Camino or Ranchero, and a late 70s Charger, the one with that wierd set of painted fenders.

Just replace the bent ones, but check the rest by rolling them on a good flat surface.
