Carlisle, Pittsburgh, Orlando... my summer vacation

I usually text myself with memorable parts, I would lose the paper pad, zip lock bag full of candy bars in cooler is good idea. Lots of beer is always needed.
I will bring more than I will consume (most likely), but will there be an ice vendor driving around?? I have drank warm beer... but certainly prefer cold.

I always stop at the big gas station on the way into the town of Carlisle for ice and water.

I never leave the grounds all weekend and just buy ice at the concession stand toward the area where you guys will be parked.

Good walking shoes and cash.
Cash is important. There's an atm under the grandstand but it has HUGE surcharge fees. I can't remember what it was now but I know I almost considered leaving to get cash somewhere else.

I refuse to buy food, Drinks or Use the ATM there. Just a Money racket.

Even though it's off my diet, I have a big weakness for fair food... I will likely indulge a little and suffer for it too... good thing there is no roommate at the hotel.

I'll probably have lunch at the fairgrounds. I decided to stay about 15-20 miles away from Carlisle and go somewhere decent for dinner that isn't jam packed with Carlisle people. I just like the low key, eat in peace setting.

However, I would be up for eating dinner Friday or Saturday at Hoss with Polara Dave and the rest of the FCBO Team if we can agree on a day and time. This has been a challenge in years past.

I'm in... and don't care which day.

My road trip is well underway...

No Imperials though, I'm sorry for anyone who is disappointed.

I have spent an enormous amount of time since the arrival of the twins sorting the crap that stays and goes in the garage and making that space as usable and crowded as I could. I also had to install a new(used) door from the laundry room to the garage for the missus. She has trained her cats to run out the front door whenever she comes home and has become accustomed to using the garage as her primary entrance. She didn't like the idea of the Imperial's stopping her from using that door so much we had words... "You can move..." she has since reconsidered.

I have stuff that was formerly in the garage everywhere and have been slowly sorting and disposing of some of it and packing the rest into the bus, which is stored of site. The way a weekend in the garage keeps turning into a weekend of moving crap has bee frustrating for sure. Add in very little time left from my work schedule and just too many "balls in the air" and I have not made enough Imperial time.

I spent some time last week getting one of the girls ready to go. Murphy's Law just would not stop kicking in every chance it got. Chasing parts (not the way to spend daylight hours), fixing equipment, and a small series of mechanical failures all added up to me not getting everything done enough to be comfortable bringing one of the Twins. It's not that they are in bad condition, but that I don't want to be far from home somewhere and have a major failure that require me to store or ship the car in questionable circumstances. The restorations are both older, but Mr C really put his heart and soul into the paint and body work he did, and I simply don't want to risk their condition on this road trip unless I have very high confidence I wont be in the ditch doing some kind of creative repairs to get/keep the car going.

Thursday, after driving 40-50 miles around town chasing down parts, the RF brake started dragging. I was leaving a parts store close to work and felt it in the parking lot... I made it a mile to ACE hardware and let it sit in the parking lot for and hour to cool (smoking). Another mile to work and put her inside for the night and got a pair of front hoses on order for the AM.
Friday, put on the hoses and continued the original repair... Murphy showed up everywhere. Then I noticed the radiator seeping green fluid...

The thought started to develop in my mind that maybe I would just fly to PA. Get myself to WV and buy that $1800 non-runner parts car. So I did what most frustrated techs would do, Friday eve I went and visited an old friend who is currently bartending and got $(&#faced. Saturday AM was washed out by Friday night, but heck, I am on vacation (BTW the GMC is what I abandoned at the bar). I certainly haven't done that in a long time, it was very good to see a number of friends... but $20 did me in (light weight). Friday I spent a little time searching the web for Formals. A few had promise, but I am cheap and really wanted a parts car. The WV car that stopped running last week(year), didn't seem like a very good plan... and for the first time in a year I couldn't find it for sale (guess the derby got it at last). I did find one that had promise and as I entered the number from the ad into my phone, it belonged to another member I have bought parts from (he is not very active here, Thanks Eddie).

Sunday, I start texting Eddie... and it just keeps getting better. We finally get most of the details sorted out... and he mentions the price just to make sure the info from the ad is clear.
I responded with "I forgot to negotiate a cheaper price..." First, he got it... sarcasm is becoming such a lost art. And... he even knock it down a little for me.

Monday, flew to pick up the parts car... I am very pleased. And he added in a nice collection of items for the car he had accumulated as he has moved on to an A body. Tank was full and she was pretty much ready to roll.

I am about to get back on the road, I stopped last night as I was beat and didn't want to pop in on mom without a warning. In a few hours I will be in the 'burb... unless I find a nice junkyard along the way. Bonus, this car has a trailer hitch... I might need to rent a uhaul for the trip home as the car is already full of parts.

I don't know if it's poor form to bring your parts car to the show, but based on logistics and not risking an Imperial... I'll see you folks there. I'll add pics later... I need to get moving again right now.

CANTFLIP: I certainly can appreciate the fix you are in trying to get your car ready for the road. Sometimes, it seems there is a conspiracy that keeps slowing us down. Ever since I got home with my recently acquired '66 300, I've been doing what you have done. Fixed an oil leak, fixed a power steering pump leak and fixed a wiring issue that caused the engine to just die while going down the road. Last week, I thought I was ready for Carlisle with time to spare. Then some problem developed in the drive line that I couldn't diagnose. Car is now in a shop where more competent eyes are looking it over. . . I'm hoping the problem isn't so serious as to prevent taking the car to the big event.

I ordered a total new exhaust system weeks ago, but it doesn't look like its gonna arrive in time to get installed before I leave Friday AM for Carlisle. Talked to the guy yesterday, and he said UPS would pick up the exhaust last night, and it should get to me some time Wednesday. That leaves just one day to remove the old system and hang the new one. I'm not counting on everything coming together, so if I show up with the car at all, its probably gonna be with the old rotten exhaust. BUT . . . In any event, I'm looking forward to meeting you and all the other C-Body riff raff this weekend.

Carlisle has a way of sneaking up on you..... Every year I say "I'm gonna _____ before Carlisle" and it becomes a "do it over the winter" project. This year is the same, but quite frankly, it hasn't been in my control either. Long story.....

But, I'm just about ready to go. The car got a wash and wax yesterday and today I'll check some fluid levels and tire pressures and then start figuring out what we're taking with us.

Beer.....! Lots of beer.
A wide brim hat
long sleeves
good walking shoes X2
a sturdy tote bag, (We'll have some if needed).
A note pad and pen, (you'll never remember where that part you want to go back and get is).
Candy bars.

Others will chime in.

How's the trip so far Will?

Wax on. . . Wax off. . .
