Carlisle, Pittsburgh, Orlando... my summer vacation

promised pictures... and got caught up in everything else and forgot you guys... sorry this is it so far...

It wasn't too long after I hit the road yesterday that I realized just how glad I was that I did it this way... After filling up, I walked out of the convenience store to watch a guy backing into the back of the new parts car... he pulled up, looked around and saw me. I let the old fella off the hook with a handshake, his reason was the new car had the fill door on the wrong side (he was a good 12 feet out of position to hit mine... but I didn't feel the need to point that out).

His new crossover suv lost a little paint... which I haven't wiped off the bumper yet. I was actually looking at the bumper while filling and noticed for the first time it was push in or pulled out a little on one side from something in the past... I think he evened it up pretty nicely. I would have been sick if that happened to an Imperial... even without any real damage.

CANTFLIP: I certainly can appreciate the fix you are in trying to get your car ready for the road. Sometimes, it seems there is a conspiracy that keeps slowing us down. Ever since I got home with my recently acquired '66 300, I've been doing what you have done. Fixed an oil leak, fixed a power steering pump leak and fixed a wiring issue that caused the engine to just die while going down the road. Last week, I thought I was ready for Carlisle with time to spare. Then some problem developed in the drive line that I couldn't diagnose. Car is now in a shop where more competent eyes are looking it over. . . I'm hoping the problem isn't so serious as to prevent taking the car to the big event.

I ordered a total new exhaust system weeks ago, but it doesn't look like its gonna arrive in time to get installed before I leave Friday AM for Carlisle. Talked to the guy yesterday, and he said UPS would pick up the exhaust last night, and it should get to me some time Wednesday. That leaves just one day to remove the old system and hang the new one. I'm not counting on everything coming together, so if I show up with the car at all, its probably gonna be with the old rotten exhaust. BUT . . . In any event, I'm looking forward to meeting you and all the other C-Body riff raff this weekend.

I really hope you get her running right and make the trip... The exhaust is just icing on the cake, don't let it stop you if you can safely travel with the old. Besides the tips, nobody is likely to see it anyhow.

Finally...

I stopped by my first job yesterday and we put her in the air, these are her worst parts. Left 1/4 needs a patch, right needs a very small one underneath and a little bubbling under the vinyl... too good to kill... I suppose I will cherry pick a little and keep her whole...

I can't even do a parts car right...

Curb feelers! Priceless!

I can still call up Stan in Dead Rear and get you a sweet deal on the 5th wheel '74! All you need is a 26 foot car hauler and you could have an IMP towin an Imp! 1 of none and the envy of all those here!

Oh, good. I'll call you when I need something...

PS: How's the trim that goes across the bottom of the windshield? :p

It's got a couple small nicks right above the wiper in the second pic... but pretty good other wise... I will try to remember to do better pics when I don't have to block the sun.

As my agent, you have power of attorney to negotiate on my behalf.... $900 US? that's like half a million Canadian ain't it? Oh and can you store it for next summer's vacation... I'm kinda liking this fly and drive thing...

Got into Carlisle at about 9:30am... trip to Uhaul, grabbed a nice breakfast and gathered supplies (booze). Checked into the motel... right next to the local trailer park and the kind of place a lot lizard is likely to charge you extra... or home base out of. But I made it this far... in a few minutes I hopefully can get a hold of my titling agency to verify it is finished (put the plate on yesterday... not sure who's registration is valid at the moment)... My friend who sold it to me put me on his insurance so I could continue my travels unimpeded.

Remember I said I was getting a trailer...

Not for that... not mine... this is mine...

I have been in contact with a guy for some time now who was selling 2 sets of imperial brakes. I have both rear axles complete and the front spindles just because they were there. I also had the trunk and back seat full of stuff that came with the 76 and my swap meet finds...

Saturday I met the seller at Carlisle and got directions to his house, picked up the trailer first thing Sunday morning and throw the heavy stuff in... then he gave me directions to his favorite do it yourself junkyard... and I hit pay dirt.

So those hard to find ATC II components I have been hoping to find are right there... and all I've got with me is a $5 3 piece plier set I bought to install the trailer connector... I took all i could and as many pigtails from under the dash as I could.

Now that I had spent a ridiculous amount of time removing my "gold"... how to carry all that crap. I searched around and found an old shower curtain in a late model, why is there always a shower curtain in the trunk of something at the yard? Do they really need to be ready to dispose of bodies or ???

All Formals insist that you bleed a little is you reach into their dashes...

I busted my *** several times looking at the cars while walking the hill side (only in PA would a junkyard on a hill seem like a good idea). Of course I was way busier looking around instead of where I stepped and the place was a gravelly broken shale surface with decades of old parts mixed in. My worst fall, my shoe caught an old window regulator as as I tried to save myself that thing came out of the ground complete.

My shower curtain was a PITA too... so I found an upgrade

How does a guy with a six figure tool collection do the classic salvage yard?
P7170184.JPG

I lost the needle nose from the set... no screw driver so there were a few other items I had to leave behind. The car was pretty picked over before I got to her, and IDK how much time finding more tools would have taken. I certainly regretted being too cheap to buy some cheap tools before this. It took me almost an hour to find the yard and after the fun inside the hot NYer victim and a few falls I didn't have as much ambition to really pick the place apart.

I did try to get enough for a feel of the place and some interesting (to me) stuff... I couldn't get any vin pics to come out and only found one fender tag... that will be posted in here too.

The WIFI here is really slow, and the sun is up... I'm in a motel in southern NC... I'll upload the rest when I get home. Time for the three S's and check my fluids (and the parts car's) and hit the road. Should be later today or tomorrow morning.

About a Mile or 2 up the road from the Fairgrounds, on Route 34. There was a silver 4 Door Formal, With the "waterfall" front end for sale. Parked in someones driveway. Did you get to see that, Jeff?
