Disaster!......

What I thought would be a simple task turned the clock back a few days.

Pulled the distributor.... no problem.
Reluctor came right out.
Removed the pickup coil
Installed new pickup coil set the gap to .008
Reinstalled the reluctor
Cleaned the outside of the distributor
Reinstalled the distributor against photo I took to make sure to put it back the same way.
No fire
Checked the new coil... 350ohms.... perfect
Checked the gap.. good
Checked for spark.... good spark
Took the old pickup to see if it was exactly the same..... nope.

It was indexed about 15 retarded in comparison to old pickup

DAMN!

When I ordered the part, the guy asked me if it was a Lean Burn and I was eagerly said “yes” never thinking they would be different.

After all th care in checking to save the original timing that was so sweet.

Got out my timing light and smelled a little gas. Figured it was from the previous attempts... no big deal.

Turned the distributor and BAM! The most horrendous backfire I’ve ever had. Blew up the new muffler real good.

Ran like **** and and I was still smelling gas. Moved my light and gas was pouring out the passenger side of the carb from the bottom. Main well on that side must have completely let go. Should have pulled them both and reset them in new epoxy.

So now I have a carb to re-do and a muffler to buy.

Got so pissed I started the tune up on the wagon with some new wires. They get cooked and start going bad after about 20k miles and we were getting close. When I got to the #6 cylinder, the wire had cooked on the heat riser valve. So that was the miss I was chasing. Finished up with the rest the the wires from the top (this involves me hurling my fat assed body on the fenders to get my hands in far enough) and changed out the cap and rotor..... back to smooth. Left old plugs in for now. Will be driving her for a few days until I can get back to the New Yorker.

New vs old pick up.... you can see the difference in the indexing if you look closely. I didn’t even notice.... Damn!

Fuel pouring out the vent for the well. On the older carbs, there is no vent so the wells can leak and you’d never know.

The old pickup worked fine until it got hot.
Here’s s the proof....

After a good run and about 1/2 hour after shut down and good heat soak.

After it cools off for about an hour and a half.

Gee, and here was thinking that you had better luck than that... good job working through your bout of the reverse Midas touch...

So... I had a talk with the NYB.

I told her that she’s been monopolizing all my attention since February. I reminded her of all the care that’s she’s received and the special attention I’ve given to make her as original as I could. All the time, talent and treasure that was needed.

I told her, gently, to please look at her sister (she did so sheepishly with a crack of her headlight door) and how well behaved she is. How appreciative of my attention she is, no matter how small. Always ready and eager. Never pouty or finicky or totally schizoid.

I told my NYB that unless her attitude and performance improved, I would be forced to sell her to the demo derby guy down the street where she would be subject to unspeakable horrors ending in her demise.

But....I would first strip her if all her good parts to sell on EBay or return to friends and rip out her guts and drop a crate engine built to kill BMW M3’s to extract my frustrated fun out of her on my terms..... and when I was done or had blown her engine (which ever comes first), I would then hand her beaten and bruised carcass over for several bouts of bashing.

That I’m going to rebuild her carb just one more time and that it better stay that way. And if she comports herself properly, I may - JUST MAY- get her a replacement muffler.

“But I was almost perfect all last week” she said. “4 days does not a week make” I reminded her.

The deal is simple. I give - you give... you take.... I will take more and harder.

But, for now, she would have to sit in the corner and think about what she’s done. And I better not catch her taking a leak on the floor......

Hmmmfff.

Well said!

Bummer, those reluctors will go on either way (upside down ) sometimes it helps with the rotor to cap phasing. Maybe that was why yours was off.

Well in that case... just threaten the car with being moved to Pittsburgh to be driven on the salted winter roads up here. Sure to scare her into having the appropriate performance and attitude.

She’s still in the corner. I said a few days and I meant it!

I think I’ll park the newly washed wagon next to her so she can see what a good girl gets when she behaves.

Here she is looking spiffy. She’s working so nicely that I just bought her an NOS grille.
