The Bluesmobile

I have to ask, because I haven't seen anyone use or recommend it, have you tried OSPHO? I have had pretty good success with it on my projects when rust is an issue. Its a cheap, easy to find (ace hardware) rust converter. It is a pain to deal with, but IMO works good. I haven't tried Rust Bullet, but have used the self etching rust converter paint from Wurth with some success if the rust was thoroughly cleaned first.

I guess I just asked a question that will bring several opinions... but would like to know what seems to have worked and what hasn't. A car with cancer like yours needs something to stop the spread, and I haven't found many that don't have some started already.

I myself havn't use OSPHO before. But I believe that is what Stan used in the trunk of his newp with good success. I've used a lot of different rust convertors before (on this car to boot), and none of them worked for a damn.

I'm gonna strip the bottom the best I can, and use Rust Bullet when the time comes. I've read a lot of good things about it. I'll add a top coat of undercoating of some sort on top of that as well. As long as I can get it sealed up good, I think it will be alright.

Thanks! My originall intent was to never make a Bluesmobile. Actually I had the dukes of hazzard theme in the back of my head at the time. These are what they used in the first pilot episodes. But as you can see the way the car went downhill the bluesmobile theme just went so great with it. Then over time I became obsessed with it. Its such a different car hobby. On top of searching for the perfect part for the car. You keep an eye out for certain props to go with it and what not.

I think I've converted a couple people on here. Not so much to want one, but not to shun one right away lol.

OSPHO + Rustoleum.
I have come to discover that Rust Bullet, POR-15 try to convert and encapsulate at the same time.
I'm of the opinion converting then encapsulating is much more thorough.

A little more progress. The outer wheel well is being fabbed up. A big pain with all the curves, and tight areas. Luckily this wheel well isn't near as bad as the passenger side was. I was doing good saturday, until the welder went down needing maintence. Barely touched it sunday. But its getting there. I can taste it! Gotta finish up the wheel well, trunk pocket floor, a few tiny spots on the wheel lip, and a couple spots on the rocker. Then all the lower sheet metal work is done!

I found this picture on Facebook, taken by someone 4-5 years ago at one of the CEVS shows. I've forgotten how good she looks out, and about, and not on jackstands all apart.

Not much going on. Finished up the dog leg/wheel well front corner. Now on to the back of the wheel well. Its not real pretty yet, but I'm working on it. I set the trunk mat on fire today. Thought i was gonna be SOL for a sec. Luckily I was able to "smack" it out. But it got pretty big for a few.. lol

Nice work Zac, I guess I forgot this was your project. I was impressed at your work on the Ram, this is an equally ambitious task!

Jumped back on it today. Rear of the wheel well installed. Needs to be ground down, and a couple holes filled.

Also fabbed up the trunk pocket floor, and got it welded in. Came out much better then the other side. Looks factory from the underside. Should have plug welded it to the quarter, but didn't think I'd be able going off the other side.

They grind down a lot quicker these days lol. Still sucks though!! Another big part of it though, is this sheet of metal seems to be a gauge or 2 bigger. It takes the heat a lot better. Doesn't burn holes quite as easy.

Could I bug you for a pic of the rear of your wheel well in this arear Stan? Or anybody with a formal? The bottom of the wheel well seems so low to me, can half *** see it from the side of the car. Wondering if this is how it should be? It seems right, but mine were so rotted away, I didn't have much to go off of..

I'll pull the car out this afternoon and post them for ya.
What angles are you looking for specifically?

Just a shot right behind the rear wheel, and one from the side of the car. Just wanna see how much of the wheel well is seen from the side, if you were only a foot tall lol. Thanks my man!

I know, its 40 up here. Why I havn't ventured out to the garage yet lol. I feel like I'm getting old.. I'm sore as hell after spending all day on the cold concrete yesterday.

Well, I guess the wheel well does stick down a bit below the quarter. Probably won't be as noticible when painted.

Thank you!

Some more accomplished. Added some new metal around the wheel lip. Once the metal behind the new patches is in, this section is done. All that's left is the drivers rocker, and one of the legs on the leaf spring mounts.
