U-haul trailers

It all handled well? What was your top speed car on and off? Weather?
The trailer handled well, as I had the diesel I rented, barely noticed it was there. Weather was rainy in Seattle, insane. Made my blood pressure spike and tension was unbearable. So much I didn't mind going way out of my way for clear weather. Mountains were snowy, like I posted elsewhere. I moved pretty quickly, the truck liked higher speeds for better mileage. I used the miles per gallon as my guide more than the speedometer.

I'm renting two in a couple weeks. Not a good time of year to go cross country with trailers on your back.

Lookout point was pretty slippery heading west, I was glad I had four wheel drive, wasn't too fun when the trailer was wagging the opposite dirt the truck was wagging. But I left at 4am so the roads hadn't been touched. Got to the pass, and the Idaho side was wet and clear from all the salt they out down. No worries after that.

You wont even notice them on the back of your Ram. I towed a Lincoln from Ohio with my 1500 Ram and I had to keep checking the mirrors just to make sure I was towing a trailer. I was on some pretty big hills and through the mountains in Penn.

I sure noticed the cars when I used the U-haul GMC trucks, not so much when they gave me a Ford. Those GMC trucks are too low, and the trailer drives you. No fun passing a truck while the trailer sways at 80mph. I had to accelerate to get it to stop. That made my heart pump a little faster.

Oh, I know. Ive been through it several times. However NOT through ice & or snow. If I hit a storm, I'm stopping at the first motel that will allow pets.

The professional test drivers at the Army Test Center told me to gently accelerate alittle if the trailer starts to sway. I tried it and it works and the trailer stops swaying. If you hit the brakes with the trailer swaying will just make it worse and danger of jack knifing and flipping over.

Dave, I would also have one spare trailer tire that hopefully fits both trailers. Nothing sucks more than being stuck on the road with a flat trailer tire.

BTW, I borrowed a friend's trailer and had one set of axle bearings in the cab of my Ram. Didn't need them but I had a set just in case.

I learned that the first time I got a car with a U-haul trailer. The one mentioned above, I was passing the truck when it swayed, the wind off the truck was pretty severe. I wasn't planning on going 90 with a car in the trailer! Other than that one time, the rest of the trip was hassle free. Both times I had away issues were with the GMC's.

The last U-Haul trailer I rented looked like it had been through a war. The fender was all wadded up, it pulled to the left when it stopped and it had a short in the wiring. I complained and was basically told that I knew nothing... and to go f.... myself.

But, anyway, I dislike the surge brakes. To beat trailer sway, nothing is better than being able to just push the accelerator down a little and reach down and drag the trailer brakes a touch.

Lots of videos on that. You reallly can't adjust the load on the U haul but you could raise or lower the hitch.

When I picked up the trailer to run to Missouri (it was an old steel trailer ) it was broken. I took it to another U haul place and switched it out. It was busted metal.

When I had this trailer, I would ease off the throttle as someone passing would come up on me (especially a semi), and then accelerate slightly as soon as I could feel the rear of the trailer push to the right. No sway then.

Just noticed Enterprise near me will rent pretty serious pick ups for towing. I’m thinking this, a u-haul trailer and the Monaco may make it to Carlisle someday.

I used Enterprise Fleet for the diesel. Not the cheapest, but what a beast. I mentioned towing when talking to the regular Enterprise and they stopped the conversation and refered me to the fleet services.

Cheaper in my case than purchasing a vehicle I’d hate driving the other 51 weeks of the year.
