1406 is the AFB copy and 1906 is the AVS...I wouldn't call that an improved 1406. It's an AVS vs an AFB.

The spacer will likely mess with carb linkage

Either way it should fix your wagon up.

The carb has an electric choke.

Yeah, I thought it must be Edelbrock's version of an electric choke to replace Chrysler's - basically a bimetal adjustable spring electrically heated like the original Chrysler one but GM style in this case. Thanks for confirming. I just elected to use the original Chrysler one. Either one should work fine.

If it starts warm in less than 30 seconds and a near dead battery, I’m happy.

there was a pretty big spacer on my TQ. This is about double that. Should be ok.

Remember to use a metal filter, they come with plastic. I read that those filters are a big cause of old car fires

I have experience with 3 new Edelbrocks. The first was on a Cadillac replacing a Quadrajet using an adaptor like yours, the only problem was no way to hook up the TH400 downshift switch, but it ran great. Next was on a built 440 in a GTX, ran like ****. I found out it was the emissions version so I had to tune it to the performance version specs. It improved but not perfect. The last was on my 66 wagon 383, used the 1406 plus the linkage adaptor and a fitting to allow bolt up of my fuel line. Ran perfect out of the box and completely solved my starting problems similar to yours. They work great for stock engines.

It’s in. It starts. Starts hot with just the turn of a key. Like fuel injection. This might be my new fave. Finally.

I counted 12 professions carb rebuilds I’ve done to cars now - all successful - and this is the first I had to toss. This is the first time I had to convert to a modem carb. Damn. I guess I’ll sell it somewhere. Basically a new TQ. Somebody should get something out of it.

accelerator cable and factory air cleaner all fit. Didn’t Like how the cruise control fit so I didn’t connect it yet. Doesn’t work anyway!

oil change done today.

1. looks like I never changed the plugs. Is this done from underneath? Looks like it looking up.

2. there is a heat damper on the passenger side exhaust downpipe. Which way is open and which is closed? Thinking it’s a good idea to just rig it open.

Congratulations! I've always changed my plugs from the top but a couple are a real bear.

I don't remember about the damper but it's a good idea to open it up especially if it's stuck closed. Put a paint mark on it when it's cold then let it get hot and check it again.

You could shoot it with a good infrared temp gun and see if it's functioning.

I don't see a bowl vent on the carb you bought

The vents are just outside the metering rod covers on top of the carb. Little rectangle shaped holes.

So then the bowl is continuously vented? I am used to them being vented only at or near idle throttle position.

1. Its probably a LITTLE EASIER to change your plugs from underneath. You can see them better and get the plug socket on easier, though top or bottom, you need to allow for stuff in the way of your wrench.

2. If "open" means open so that exhaust goes out the exhaust pipe, then yes, that will be safest, though if you live in a cold climate, it may make for prolonged warm-up times.

I do the big block plugs from the bottom.
I was thinking that on your Thermoquad the main jet wells were leaking or your rebuilder installed wrong x seals or miss aligned.
But great news that your getting a good ride again. Great looking car.
