Wire wheel and elbow grease, mineral spirits and etching primer and paint. I had to re-weld one of the spark plug wire holders.
 
Nice job, intake looks great. What grit and what size flex hone did you use for honing the cylinders. I'll be taking on the same job soon. Looking forward to seeing this one finished. Thanks.
I lied, 240 grit on the flex hone.
 
Mineral spirits on the heads and block for some cleaning. Thin film of anti-seize on the the mating surfaces. Torqued the heads down to specs with anti-seize on the threads and washer and bottom of the bolt head. Dropped pushrods in and torqued down valve train nice and slow! Getting there.

Impressive. This is the first one you've built from scratch? I've only assembled two, a 383 and a 340, 30 years ago. I agree with Stan, drop off at the machinists and write a check, although I do want to do my 440 like this. It's a bucket list thing.

I advocate the heads to go to the machinist for rebuilding.

First time a did a ground up rebuild. I really enjoy it. I hope it runs.

Machinist! I milled those heads true with a hand grinder and a construction grade 2x4 from the home depot. Honestly, lets hope your wrong!
 
Looking really good Jake! I bought a decent sandblasting cabinet off Craigslist and I've used the hell out of it almost constantly. I loved it even before I had a grown up compressor!
 
Got the valley pan and intake along with the oil pan on today. Found a easy way to clean small bolts and washers.

For your manifolds try 1 part molasses to 9-10 parts water in a tub, works better in warmer climates, takes a while, but it dose work, they will come out like they were just cast, blasting is way quicker

Just behind you in building my '68 383 with the original low comp pistons, 0 to +6 proud of the deck (gotta love the squareness of the blocks from factory), 9cc dish, averaged 90cc 906's, 0.021 mopar steel gasket, average comp 8.6:1. Its a VERY low dollar rebuild to get me on the road, a couple of bores were a little bigger than the others, but all good :)

Just a quick bit of info on ring gaps/spacing that is particularly interesting, after reading this one, i didn't bother filing my rings - figured i would do more harm than good with a bastard file or dremmel, there was a .005 spread between them. The FSM says between .016 and .055 - which funnily enough correlates with what the article says, my biggest was .029

Interesting article that Alchemi found, but I will use the ring manufactures recommendations on end gap and gap placement if provided with the rings
 
Got a little done today. Went on a long road trip to texas and back with the family so I am behind.
