1972 Fury III 360 101498 miles

Did you have your air cleaner off and the throttle & choke in the wide open position for the compression test?

My high mileage 1968 Fury III (fleet build) 318 had much higher compression than yours with several tests in it's final days lowest cylinder IIRC was 150 and had several cylinders at 180, 190. Hot or Cold didn't vary much.

Could not kill that engine.

No I didn't. I thought over several revolutions it would draw enough air to pump up to max pressure. Maybe I need to do the test again. How do you block the throttle plates open?

Just take the return spring,,,, no don't do it that way, just put a wood block/socket/screwdriver in the carb lever to hold it open. AND make sure you remove it before starting to drive the car!

I think you will see your compresion numbers go up unless the cylinders are worn.

Remember my numbers came from a 1968 318.

Good news: vacuum is 16 inches and rock steady. Still a little low, but encouraging. Cured a lot of the problems with moving distributor vacuum advance from manifold to ported.

· AF several drops hanging at square lower rear of oil pan. AF drop on curved portion where rear of oil pan meets front trans. Also AF puddle within leaking trans oil puddle on floor below front trans.

· Sides of block: dry. Also oil pan bolts below dry. Freeze plugs: some of the core/freeze plugs have already been replaced with Dorman freeze plugs
· Area below rear of intake: dry
Seems like I have a leaking freeze plug at rear of the block to go along with a torque converter seal leak at front of trans. Am I missing something on the source of the AF leak or do I just need to bite the bullet and drop the trans? thanks, Ben

Hi PM
Now we know what my interior originally looked like. I guess the brown dash pad does go with the gold interior. Maybe, because Chrysler thought the pad matches brown-tinted gold exterior paint?
I thought from your other thread that someone was going to buy the whole car. Did the person back off?
Thanks, Ben

Freeze plug could be anyone of these. If it's one on the head I'd pull the engine, I blew out a head one and you can't really get at it easy even with the transmission removed and engine tilted down so it's remove head or as some do on other cars holesaw a hole from inside the car firewall for easy access!
I removed the engine on mine and popped all the freeze plugs rodded out all the pile of crud in the bottom of the water jackets that the super duper flush that I tried just loosened it all up and made the side plugs leak.

Tranny front seal is a easy fix while engine is out. A rebuild can be put off if transmission is shifting and working fine.

Speedometer cable? Rube Goldberg is my guess, hate to see what else he's done to your car.

Plus give that engine a good steam clean or several Gunk baths, (helps you spot where leaks are coming from).

I can remember once when I was checking the oil on my Fury III, Stanley the owner of a trucking firm was there to see my boss said when he saw my engine compartment "I bet you wished they were all that clean".
My answer was "They are I don't work on dirty equipment, John Deere school taught me that". :D

i was under that same impression but , he has not sad anymore about it , ''just what a boat'' . well he does go fishin , lol . but if someone else is in to it . he might get off the pot or something , lol . but lucky me i'm waiting for the seller to get some cars out of the way (non runners) so i can get the car to my place . still working on some of the dodge pickups he has there , he didn't like my first offer . but i'm use to that , lol . so the next well be the final and i'll pick what i want and leave the trash to him .

The trans is making a winding noise when in reverse. Going forward, it is quiet and perfect. Would you have it rebuilt?
I agree that the engine needs a steam cleaning. Do you have any advice on where to rent the steam cleaner?
Just so we're straight with each other: I'm going to try to avoid pulling the engine for now. It's good advice, but I am getting help from family members in most jobs because I have Lyme disease arthritis. While it may have been unwise to buy the car, that's water under the bridge, since I own it and I like it. Also, it's not a big deal to just hold on to the car while I beat Lyme. I don't mind pulling the trans, but the engine is a little much. Willing to pull heads if needed.
Thanks for the advice, Ben

Hi PM
Some people are ATNA. Hope he's not one of them. If he is, let me know when you get it home, if you are going to part it.
For what it's worth, that's a cool car with the really neat 72 coupe quarter/wheel well styling, no vinyl top, minimal rust. Somebody ought to want that car as a roller. If it is to be parted, I'll try to put together a wish list.
Thanks, Ben

Try your local rent-a-center but most will only have pressure washers. Steam cleaners are little used now because you can get a good burn if you don't wear appropriate protective gear, I know as I still had burn scars on my forearm till I was 45 years old from when I was a young 15 year old cleaning equipment on my first job.
Plus now-a-days you need a EPA wash down bay to handle the waste run off. Believe me I've seen a modern shop with one. PITA, I use to get crap from the neighbor down the street if she went by when I was hitting my engine bay with the hose in the street after a quick gunking out. My attitude at the time was I was finding the leaks and stopping them as millions of un-maintained vehicles in the USA are constantly loosing fluids all over the roadways every minute, thus the grease strip you see and every motorcyclist is aware of.

Oh man, you shoulda seen the way we steam cleaned the engine room back in the day...... A rubber hose taped to a broomstick handle hooked up to LP steam (15 psi). Worked really well though.

My grampa Allan Jones' insignia. He was on an aircraft carrier in WWII. I'm trying to find out which one. Another Navy man told me he was probably a Chief Petty Officer and wore this on his collar.

3 week update. Been battling a recurrence of Lyme disease. Feeling a little better. Also, having a septic drainage field problem. Soil won't perk. Lots of paperwork to get repair permit for new field, different location.
