Help me spend some $$

Turquoise and Blue were 2 different engine colors used on 440's. The blue paint number on the chart is the right color for your 440 for 1972/1973.

The following chart shows the paint for 1971 and previous 440's.

1970 and 1971 440's were painted different colors. Chrysler wasn't too strict on engine colors.

I learned something... I did not know there were 2 blue colors...

How about for a '74?

Hey Mr C,

I think I found what looks like the U code cam by lunati?-
http://www.lunatipower.com/Product.aspx?id=1560&gid=255
Has an RPM range of 1800-5500

I also went onto COMP cams website, and put the info to select a cam...
Here are the ones they recomended-

265DEH
http://www.compperformancegroupstor...e_Code=CC&Product_Code=34-226-4&Category_Code=
This one has an RPM range of 1500-5250

XE256H
http://www.compperformancegroupstor...e_Code=CC&Product_Code=33-234-4&Category_Code=
This one has an RPM range of 1000-5200

I'm looking for as much down low torque as I can get. I'm not sure if the factory HP cam would be best being the operating range doesnt start until 1800 rpm. I'm leaning more towards the comp cams.

Any opinions guys?

Hope you guy's dont mind me asking so many questions.. lol I've read many engine build threads, but now here I am with my own, with a bunch of questions. A lot more to come.... This being my first engine to mess with.

Stock Hi Perf 440 specs were 268/284 Duration, 0.450"/0.458" lift, I didn't see any specs on the Comp cams links...the Lunati cam is "lumpier".

Yes, it was blue when I pulled it but it had Orange paint under the blue. It was an early 72 hp block and this was in 83.
The Orange paint made me look at it closer because I thought it was a 383

Stock ??? Never seen one, but if I've learner anything about Chrysler its "never say never"

Chrysler wasn't very strict on engine paint. Chrysler claims the last year they painted any engine orange was 1971. I'm sure there might of been some early 1972's that could of been painted orange.

I can't tell you how many brawls I've gotten into on the 1974 440 steel crank issue.

Did you check for blue paint under the orange under the blue?

I wish I could of worked for Chrysler in the 60's and 70's. That would of been so cool!!!

It would of been sweet to work for chrysler then... Hell I would of loved just to be around in the days when these cars were on the roads. If only....

Think Im leaning towards the comp XE256H for the cam choice. Ill post a link to the specs when I get home to the computer. Seen some guys on the other c body sites use them, and seemto like them. Looks to make good low end torque and work well with the lower compression engines.

I like the RV cam idea to.... But think it might be better using something more updated, then the older stuff.. However the older stuff is tried and true.
