Help me spend some $$

Thanks stan! Your saving me some money. Guy wants $125 +shipping for it. Its been cleaned, and in primer.

Seems like I'm stuck with the factory intake. Not that I'm complaining. I do have the original one to use which=no $$ to spend! Do you know of any low profile intakes that I would notice any gains from?

Eddie lo-riser dual plane Performer and that's about it.
Don't say "stuck". Sandblast and paint it with "Cast Aluminum (not reg, "Aluminum") Hi-temp paint. It will look like a cool aftermarket.

Thanks stan. It will probably get cleaned and repainted. Regardless of its the stock one, or an aftermarket, it will be getting painted engine color though! lol. I like the aluminim look and all, but prefer the blue. I was just looking for any performance gains.

Thanks Bob! Rub it in some more! Haha i wish I could use that one!

Havn't really been messing with the 440 the last few weeks.. Been to busy dealing with another engine.. A dreaded 4.7 in my ram.

Finally had enough dough to get her fixed.. Thank god its done and over.. Luckily though, no work or dirty hands for me.. Just handing over a nice sum of $2600! Uhg..

Found a shop through some friends that I was comfortable with working on the ole girl. They did a block test, and sure enough my heads were warped. Chrysler says that the 4.7 heads cannot be machined, and must be replaced. The shop owner who I've talked to quite a bit, claimed to have had a ton of 4.7 heads machined, and had no problems afterwards. I really couldnt beat the price either, so went with it. So heads went out to be machined, along with a valve job, and new lifters. Found a used timing cover to replace mine that had some gouges in it, along with a new radiator, and a bunch of other stuff, shes finally back on the road! As mentioned, total came to $2600, where as the local chrysler dealer wanted $2300 just in labor. Not including any parts.

Once all the plastic crap, and what not was removed, I was blown away by just how small the 4.7 really is! lol Makes some decent power though, for being so tiny..

All back together

Alright, back to the 440!

Everything looks good on the passenger head, and since I dont have as much $$ to play with as I was hoping, gonna stay with the current heads. Installed new valve stem seals, along with the new springs. Driver side soon to come...

Not enough money in the world to make me do major engine work on a van.
I'll set it on fire first....

Same here.. Wouldnt catch me running around in a van niether.. Not my cup of tea. The engine above is in my 03 ram 1500 4x4. I really didnt want to drop the money on it as it was.. But still have a note on it. Money is tight as it is, and i dont see me getting something else anytime soon. So hopefully get another 130k trouble free miles outa it. Im not holding my breath though.....

Ran into a road block with the driver side head...

Pulled it off, and was going through it, but the valves wernt looking to hot. Sooo Reassembled it, then took the new stuff off the passenger head, reinstalled the old stuff, and dropped them, and the new parts off at a local machine shop. They will be disassembled, hot tanked, magnufluxed, and get a valve job. Should have them back in a few days hopefully.

Other then that been tearing more stuff of the engine. Everything else is looking good. Just need to get the block cleaned up, and ready for paint, and start installing the new parts.

What have you guys been paying for valve jobs recently? There is not a lot of shops to choose from around here.. Theres a place just for cylinder heads in the area, however they wanted $290 just for a valve job! Sounded plain stupid to me. The shop I went with performing the work mentioned above is chargine $125. Sounded reasonable to me. They just did the heads on my ram, so I know they do decent work. Was just wondering if this was in the normal ball park..

Handing my guy the old heads and all the new parts cost me about 300 bucks last time.

Maybe that other shop was in the ball park then.. It just seemed a little high to me. The place doing them just went through my aluminum 4.7 heads. It was $350 for them to be resurfaced, and have a valve job done.

The $125 is the base route, thats not including anything that might need to be replaced..

$20 per hole was the average cost 20-30 years ago in the Detroit area

I was talking with the old man last night, he said he had his 360 heads done by some friends for $80/100 in the ann arbor area.

I was just wondering what was the norm, as I had nothing to really compare to..

Thanks guys

I know of one Machine Shop in the A2 area and it's in the A2 airport complex. My guess is only ONE 360 head for that $ X2... or I'd doubt they're consistently paying their rent on time! Dono, They've been there for quite a spell? 'Course Maybe I'm the one that's out of touch?

The heads came home today. Not for $125 though lol. You guys had it right. Spent $377 total on em. The guy said they were in really good shape, but did need a little work. They got all new exhaust valve guides, a resurface, and new freeze plugs, along with the other work mentioned above. He also mentioned, they have only been surfaced a total of just under .020 since new.

Had to unwrap one to check em out.. They do look good!

That's turning into an expensive "free" engine. I actually feel a little guilty that you've had to do so much to it.

It's your fault though since you decided to **** around with it instead of just dropping it in. ;) Running fine when you took possession of it......

Oh & don't forget to add the cost of carpet cleaning in the Jeep. ;)

With every 0.010" shave from deck side of the head you should shave 0.0123" from intake manifold side of the same head.
That's why I hate shaving heads. Pile on the head gaskets till you make up for the .020 shave.

Why in sam hell would you feel guilty Ross? I told you I was gonna go through it real good! Besides this is the fun part to me! If it makes you feel better, I'm leaving the bottom end alone... :eek:ccasion14:

Besides I know it was a good running engine, just want to make sure it doesnt come back out for a long while.

Thanks Stan!

Is it a "MUST" do?
Can I get away with shaving the intake at all? I'm probably gonna run the intake and a few parts back to them for a cleaning, coul have the intake shaved then. I still dont know though, I might get a eddie performer for shits ang giggles... I could still run that up to be shaved though.

In MY book, one or the other must be done.
Also, in my book... just get a thicker head gasket....
That .020 head shave will give you less than a 0.4 raise in compression. It's so little, I wouldn't be concerned about the loss or gain in C.R.
