Pistons, Rings and Bearings removed!

Figured I would give another update. I am waiting on my cam bearings to ship. Once I have those, I will take those to the machine shop. Maybe in the next 2 weeks I will have everything back and I can start building. Until then... I have been cleaning every part I can and painting. I even cleaned every bolt and nut I removed. I did buy new main cap, rods and head bolts. I cleaned and painted in the engine bay. I also redid most of the wiring. We will see what else I get done before the block is ready.

Side question for everyone. How should I protect these bolts after I spent all this time cleaning them? Dont want them to instarust since they are bare metal. All of these bolts are from the factory. Just use like an engine paint clear coat? Is there something easier where I could just dip the head of the bolt in to cover it in whatever coating?

I took all mine out of a shiny new ARP box. They sell kits with every bolt required to assemble a BB Mopar.

Other than that I'd put them in ziploc bags labelled by category.

I only ordered new for the internals. I want to save a couple bucks and reuse the rest. They all cleaned up super nice, just want to make sure they stay that way.

You could try Permatex Rust Neutralizer on the smooth cylindrical portion of any long bolts. Permatex number 2 gasket maker or Loctite red thread lock will seal the bolt threads. I’ve had a hard time finding anything that doesn’t break up and fall off the bolt heads during install. You could try painting them black, doing the install, and then covering the bolt heads with clear. On the other hand if it’s black on black, it might be simplest to touch up with black.

I got them all cleaned up and shiny steal looking. I think I am just going to clear coat the whole engine after I have it together. Maybe that clear will keep the bolts ok for a while... LOL

What clear engine paint are you going to try?

Also, did you keep your original pistons?
If not, what did you replace them with?

So far, the machine shop said they were fine and I could reuse them. Haven't decided what to do from here yet though. He will get them all cleaned up and once I have them back home, ill figure out what I am going to do.

Update: I did get my cam bearings in and dropped them off to my machine shop. He is a bit behind with most of his staff getting COVID. He said he will try and have it ready for me in the next 2 weeks.

I did however get the trans back from being rebuilt. I did discover that it is indeed the original trans from the VIN with matching numbers. He cleaned it up some but not to my liking so I wire wheeled it. Looks pretty now! I also cleaned up the drive shaft stuff and ordered new Ujoints and so on. We are getting closer!

Well, almost a month since my last update, however, I now have my block back! Heads and pistons will be done next week.

Seems my engine was made by the day shift at least? LOL
