So far as I dig deeper into my 383

Use whichever one fits snugly on the head of the bolt.. You don't have a full socket set to try them??
I just went out to verify - I thought too long on the original reply and corrected my thought, was gonna say 11/16" bolt head.. and that's what it is, not 3/4".

Failed another exam, once again for going back and changing the answer - always happens.

Haha right, well lost 3 motorcycles and a 69 fast back, but I have my boy full time all the time and he's my world and who knows he may have hid the socket from me lol

So this morning I went to take off the heads and the lower head bolts are at an angle. So no problem I'll just remove the exhaust manifolds... So the owner before had new exhaust put on and the exhaust flange that runs to the manifold flange is over sized. The bolts just sit in there, so I think he (exhaust shop) had them welded into the exhaust manifolds;( So I'm hoping if I put together a 11/16 short socket with a swivel and then an adaptor I'll be able to get to it. Fingers crossed, now it's a Sunday project lol again.

I take it , you have dual exhaust? If you do you should be able to move the manifold off the head with a pry bar. If you have the stock manifolds, and not the HP ones you may have to lift the engine on the passenger side a little so the manifold will clear the upper control arm mount. (Yes I have done this before).

Stock manifolds, got them off and away, but maybe the socket I have is to long and not allowing me to get the angle unless I pull the manifolds out. Have to go to work now but I'll try a smaller socket and a swivel

OK. Sorry you have to go to work, (the nastiest four letter word in the English Language). Keep us posted on your progress.

Ok , so once i removed my heads i did have the water journals dump antifreeze. So I really can't say if this antifreeze in the piston was from removing the heads or from a blown head gasket. These photos are driver side head and gasket.

Now for checking the block and heads I need to get feeler Gage that's 0.002 correct? The one I have is 0.02.

Funny you all talking about head bolts. While channel surfing yesterday I surfed to Graveyard Carz and the allmighty Mark 'Monster Matco Toolbox' Worman uses a SnapOn Torque Wrench on the headbolts of the 440 rebuild!
